What will the new year bring?

Welcome to the final edition of PCC Insight for 2022.  While most people have a break over Christmas we are aware the pressure does not ease on the NHS and health and care professionals continue to deliver the best care they can to patients.

The last year has continued to be challenging for all health services, with relentless change and pressures.  We have seen primary care networks (PCNs) enabling use of a much wider range of professionals to support patients through the additional roles recruitment scheme.  The debate over virtual access to primary care versus face to face care continues and its still challenging for practices to get the mix right for patients.  The publication of the Fuller stocktake, supported by all integrated care board chief executives heralded the possible development of more inclusive neighbourhoods built on the foundations of PCNs.  As more PCNs incorporate, sometimes working together in alliances or federations, and as practices consider their future, again with many starting to work in formal or informal groups change continues, with the scale of primary care adjusting for the future.  The next year is likely to see further change and the opportunity is there for primary care to influence the future direction through integrated care systems.

This edition includes, David Colin-Thomé, chair of PCC, considering what primary care at scale could look like.  John Lockwood provides tips to practices who may face a CQC inspection and Sue Wallis looks at tips for PCNs to support good communication with patients and their teams.

In the last year PCC has supported numerous primary care professionals, practices, PCNs, commissioners and several other clients from both inside and outside the health service.  Over 7,000 delegates have attended our events and we have responded to thousands of helpdesk queries.  We have worked with all integrated care boards in England and health boards in Wales through our support to programmes such as the community pharmacist consultation service and accelerated cluster development.  We look forward to continuing to support health and care services in 2023.

We wish all our readers a happy Christmas and look forward to working with you in the New Year.
