Understanding primary care-what trusts really need to know

PCC and Capsticks have joined forces to create events where trusts can explore how to engage with primary care and community services to work towards viable local solutions. 
 
The half-day sessions will give you the opportunity to address such burning questions as:
  •  What does integration with primary care really mean?
  •  What are the implications of shifting activity, both clinical and non-clinical?
  • How can providers in all sectors align their interests including director duties and the implications of cross-organisational working?
  • Are there viable win-win scenarios or inevitable losers? How collaboration can support independence rather than mergers
  • How can your organisation engage in the agenda as a leader?
  • Potential timelines for your project.
 
The half-day sessions can help you understand what options are available to help identify where you can start this work and what it is likely to entail. The sessions can be run for individual trusts, groups of trusts or those from the same locality with a shared interest in reaching a solution.
 
Each session will focus on:
 
  • Joint working across organisations and delivering outcomes: reviewing the different ways in which you can work with other organisations to provide a more efficient or effective service – including understanding the mechanics of MCPs, PACS and other collaborative models and the principles behind prime providers, alliance contracting and supply chains
  • Getting involved in primary care/community services: how other sectors can work with primary care including the extent to which trusts and independent providers can enter into or support GP practices and primary care contracts
  • Understanding the contractual requirements: getting to grips with the key features of the basic contracting routes such as GMS, PMS, APMS and the NHS standard contract
  • Embedding new approaches: organisational and system development including supporting the design and delivery of engagement and relationship programmes to embed new working
  • Wider statutory framework: connected issues such as workforce and pensions, procurement and competition law implications of your arrangements.
 
The sessions are for senior decision-makers responsible for organisational strategy, partnerships, service development and contracting including CEOs, finance and resource directors, directors of strategy and operations, medical and nursing directors and chief operating officers. They can be held at your premises or a convenient local venue.

Practice team development: care navigation and signposting

Reception staff can make a big difference to workload and the smooth running of the practice by making sure patients see the most appropriate professional. Active signposting is the first of the ten high impact actions (HIAs) to release time for care set out in the GP Forward View. According to NHS England active signposting “provides patients with a first point of contact which directs them to the most appropriate source of help”.

PCC’s care navigation and signposting session empowers the reception team to offer choices to patients enabling them to make informed decisions about their care and how to access the most appropriate professional first time. The session examines models of care navigation and the fundamentals of signposting and social prescribing (HIA number 8). Leeds first city to fully join up with GP Connect

NHS Digital is ensuring that clinicians have access to patients’ GP records right across Leeds.

The GP Connect service allows GP practices and authorised clinical staff to share and view GP records digitally and allows them to make better decisions about a patient’s care. This means that clinicians in hospitals across the city will be able to access patients’ previous encounters with GPs, improving the data link between the care received at primary and secondary care.

The service is available to all GP practices in Leeds after GP system supplier TPP last month joined EMIS Health in implementing GP Connect.

RCGP figures show access to GPs is lowest for 15 years

23 January 2019

The Royal College of GPs has compared population statistics with figures from NHS Digital to show that the ratio of GPs to the overall population is at its lowest for 15 years. In 2017 there were 6.19 full-time equivalent GPs per 10,000 population compared to 6.56 in 2007. The ratio is the lowest it has been since 2004. Figures for 2018 are not yet available.
