Why dentistry needs to be at the table
Oral health has a huge impact on the NHS budget. Apart from the visible costs of primary care services, less obvious costs from poor dental health include a high number of A&E and other hospital admissions. Reforms to the NHS dental contract aim to replace an activity based payment system to one in which dentists are rewarded for effective preventive care. In a special edition of PCC Insight, we look at the reforms and the improvements in clinical practice that will need to accompany them. We also consider the potential role of dentists as health monitors and coaches – and make the case for dentistry as a vital part of any viable primary care network.
