• Introduction

    22 August 2018

The dental contract reform programme is currently testing a contract model that focuses on disease prevention and supports patients on a care pathway to secure improved oral health. At the beginning of the calendar year 2018, expressions of interest were sought from NHS dental practices to join the programme and expand the learning being gleaned from the participation of the many existing practices already involved. The aim in taking on additional sites is both to increase the overall learning and to act as a dry run for any future roll out. Up to 50 new practices (wave 4) will join the programme in two cohorts; the first in October this year and the second in January 2019.

  • Making it work clinically

    22 August 2018

The clinical philosophy is fundamental to the prototype contract being tested and places the emphasis on prevention rather than treatment. This is a change to the way that NHS primary care dentistry has hitherto been provided by most high street practices and may require a different mind-set and way of working. It is therefore essential that practices participating in the programme consider how they will deliver care. This section will provide some resources that will help practices with implementing this new way of working from a clinical perspective.

  • Clinical philosophy

    22 August 2018

This section of the webpages focuses on the clinical philosophy that underpins the dental contract reform programme which is predicated on the need to change the focus of dental service provision from the delivery of treatment to disease prevention. The intention is for the practice to take the patient on a journey, referred to as the care pathway. This involves the patient in episodes of care deemed clinically necessary, with a clinician or oral health educator helping and encouraging the patient to take responsibility for their oral health and to participate daily in their own care to minimise the occurrence of disease.
