  • CQC clarifies its approach to dental inspections

    In December 2016 CQC consulted on a number of changes to our assessment frameworks (key lines of enquiry). While the key questions (safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led) will remain the same, CQC has introduced one set of key lines of enquiry for health services and one set for adult social care services. These have now been updated to reflect which key lines of enquiry do not apply to dentistry. From April 2018 CQC will be introducing the updated assessment framework for dentistry.

    From 13 January 2018 a new EU directive called the Payment Services Directive comes into force. This will stop businesses such as dental practices from being able to apply charges when patients use their debit or credit cards to make payments.

  • Report on UK dentists' morale and motivation

    9 December 2016

    An NHS Digital survey of 6,000 self-employed primary care dentists across the UK finds that morale has fallen since 2012/13 and that half of primary care dentists who treat NHS patients often think about leaving general dentistry.

    Despite this, over half of dentists (57%) report that they have the opportunity to do challenging and interesting work and 55% feel good about their job. However, the report also found that the more time dentists spent on NHS work, the lower their levels of motivation.
