  • Report on UK dentists' morale and motivation

    An NHS Digital survey of 6,000 self-employed primary care dentists across the UK finds that morale has fallen since 2012/13 and that half of primary care dentists who treat NHS patients often think about leaving general dentistry.

    Despite this, over half of dentists (57%) report that they have the opportunity to do challenging and interesting work and 55% feel good about their job. However, the report also found that the more time dentists spent on NHS work, the lower their levels of motivation.

    NHS Digital has published a detailed study of the earnings and expenses of full-time and part-time self-employed primary care dentists who carried out some NHS/health service work in England and Wales, Northern Ireland or Scotland during the 2014/15 financial year. Values are not directly comparable between countries due to differing contractual arrangements and the use of different methods to derive dental type in each country.

    Public Health England has published a toolkit for local authorities commissioning oral health improvement programmes for pre-school children. The toolkit uses the best available evidence to estimate the reduction in tooth decay as a result of the intervention, the costs of delivering each of the programmes and the cost savings.
